Cross Body Bags

Call them fanny packs, belt bags, or crossbody bags everyone knows what you are talking about and iterations of them can be found as far back as approximately 3,300 B.C.E with the discovery of a very similar bag on the mummified remains of the Otzi Icemean. Throughout history, many similar items are part of the fashion world ranging from the Scottish sporran to Native American buffalo bags.  The first modern presentation of these types of bags was seen in a 1954 Sports Illustrated Christmas gift guide. At a price of $10.00 (which would be about $115.00 today) it was made of leather and suggested as a gift idea for those individuals on the shopping list that enjoyed skiing so they could wrangle all of the various items they would need for their adventures on the slopes keeping their hands and arms free to use their poles. In modern times, up until the early 80s, they were seen as an outdoorsy type of bag and used by hikers, skiers, bicyclists and the like. When the 1980s came so did bright colors, synthetic fabrics, and statement prints. When the 1980s came so did bright colors, synthetic fabrics, and statement prints. They transitioned to streetwear and urban fashion trends along with maintaining their roots in sports related usage. The popularity of these types of bags at the time crossed over so many groups and became wildly popular with all demographics from suburban moms to urban rappers. In fact, during the decade, the “fanny pack,” as it was often called at the time, gained so much popularity that in 1988 one publication named them the “hottest product of the year!” Their efficiency, practicality, and the way they allowed individual style expression was a main reason for their enormous success.

The later 90s saw a decline in their popularity as the counterculture and “grunge” style fads of the time eschewed them as “too common.”  It wasn’t until the 2000s and early 2010s that a resurgence of interest in them started as fashion houses and luxury brands began offering their design iterations on runways of fashion shows. At the time “on the streets” they were largely being carried by festival goers and ravers. This synergy of high fashion and fun streetwear usage caught the eyes of celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Jared Letto who then incorporated them into their style wardrobes and are still often seen using them. This solidly has earned the crossbody bag being named as a wardrobe “must have” and as such they are very much sticking around for a LONG time to come.

This year we have decided to add two crossbody style bags to our collection. They are perfect for the gym, beach, on the go, and evening out, or even travel.  Differences in logo placement, material type and logo design, along with color options, is where you will begin to see the uniqueness of the two styles.
